Express an intention, desire or purpose to do something. The speaker expresses one's intention to do the act mentioned in the preceding statement.
Example
  • 염색을 려고 하는데 요즘 무슨 색이 유행이에요?
    I'm planning to dye my hair, what color is popular these days?
  • 날씨가 좋아서 공원에 려고 해요.
    I'm going to the park because the weather is nice.
  • 일월에 운동을 시작하려고 하는 사람들이 많아요.
    There are many people who intend to start exercising in January.

Usage

Unlike V+(으)려고, (으)려고 하다 completes the sentence clause.

Shortened form

When (으)려고 하다 modifies a noun and becomes (으)려고 하는, it is often shortened to 려는.

  • 한국어를 배우려는 학생들이 많아요.
    There are many students that intend to learn Korean.
