Continuing state

-ing
Expresses a continuing state of a completed action. The action has been completed, but the state still maintains itself.
Example
  • 얼굴에 상처가 아직 남아 있습니다.
    The wound is still there on the face.
  • 버스 정류장에는 사람들이 줄을 있어요.
    People are standing in line at the bus stop.

Spacing

Both versions [아/어]있다 and 아/어 있다 (with space) exist and can be used interchangeably.

V+아/어 있다 vs 고 있다

아/어 있다 (Continuing state)

Expresses the continuing state of a completed action.

Can be used when talking about standing, sitting, lying, whereas 고 있다 can not.

고 있다 (Ongoing state)

Expresses an action currently in progress.

Can be used with verb of wearing such as 입다, 신다, 쓰다.
