을/를 바라다

1.

Hope

to hope, to wish
Used to express the speaker's hope or wish for something to happen.
Example
  • 여러분의 성공을 기원하며 행복한 미래를 가지시길 바랍니다.
I hope for your success and wish you a happy future.
  • 모두가 안전하게 돌아오시길 바랍니다.
    I hope everyone returns safely.
  • 모두의 행복을 바랍니다.
    I hope for everyone's happiness.

Usage with verbs

The structure starts with a N+을/를 (Object marker) which can sometimes be omitted if implied. This is why you may see the phrase "-기(를) 바라다" in grammar books. Since 을/를 바라다 (Hope) requires a noun as its object, verbs must first be nominalized using V+기 (Verb to noun).

Pronunciation

Often pronounced as 바래요 instead of 바라요. While the latter is the correct form you might see 바래요 used more often in speech and written Korean.
